Social Networking: What to do?

This summer I have pondered the idea of permitting students to use social networking sites, since this is the 'world' they communicate in. Most students have social networking sites regardless if schools permit it or not. My thought has been that if our school can create an internal site might that be a way to disuade the use of proxies - or just plain stop the complaining. Or maybe we could schedule times during the day that students can view their sites - under strict supervision - and I mean surrendering their user/pswrd. On the other hand, perhaps social networking, like many social activities can be done outside of school hours. I mean, can't a student go 6 hrs without social newtworking? Truly, why is social networking considered so evil. How is it worse than students passing notes in school? Ahhhh...what to do?
